Stripes

19/03/2009 | Stripes

Oh how the stars love their stripes. Much like gladiator sandals, horizontal stripes (usually in black and white) are a trend with longevity. While some may say this look is played out—they’re stripes, come on—our research shows the classic print loiters on fashion runways and famous frames alike.

Today’s stripes play off the rich history of this trend. It nods to French favorite Brigitte Bardot and mod Edie Sedgwick, not to mention encompassing fashion’s past nautical, preppy, and punk movements. And who could forget our favorite striped wonder—Elvis—as seen in the classic Jailhouse Rock?

A great modern version of this look is embodied by this Marc by Marc Jacobs shark t-shirt ($183.40, matchesfashion.com). After some snooping, we found that there are scores of stripes at every price point, and here are some of our favorites.

Vince makes a jersey, short-sleeved, striped mini dress in either black/gray or dark brown/grey ($120, bloomingdales.com).

Gap’s striped twisted tank—a soft knit cotton blend—comes in dark charcoal/white or oatmeal heather/white ($22.50, gap.com).

McQ by Alexander McQueen takes on two trends (bibs and stripes) with his striped tuxedo tank in navy/white ($153, shopbop.com).

T Luxury’s three-quarter sleeve, lightweight, long-length sweater features a wide black/white stripe (red/white and light pink/white also available) and bell cuffs ($90, bluefly.com).
