Noir Garden

19/03/2009 | Noir Garden

Recently we’ve noticed an interesting twist on the season’s romantic theme, which we like to call the Noir Garden. It seems that black-and-white flowers are suddenly sprouting all around town. The print—occasionally augmented with bits of bright color—is a clean, graphic necessity in any wardrobe and also an unfussy way to embrace feminine dressing.

Many spring fashion shows highlighted this contrasting palette, and some of our favorite examples debuted at the Luella and Etro shows. This look translates nicely in both day and night ensembles. Emilie de Raven and Sienna Miller chose to wear their smart florals for outings in Coachella and London, respectively. Rachel Bilson added gray tights, black heels, and popping red lips for Zac Posen’s Fall 2007 collection after-party in New York. The result? An understated, yet sophisticated, evening look (no wonder she’s a WhoWhatWearDaily.com reader favorite).

It’s easy to source little dresses that meld with this trend. One great option is Diane Von Furstenberg’s Spring Shadows Dress, a babydoll shirt dress with magenta and mustard accents ($420, mytheresa.com). For even less commitment, try the Florencia short strapless dress from Forever 21 ($27.80, forever21.com). The bloom is on!
